Ode to Cottage Cheese

I suspect that if you did Weight Watchers in the 70's and didn't like cottage cheese, you were in big trouble.

Cottage Cheese is the base for so many recipes in the 1972 Revised WW Program Cookbook, there are almost too many too count. Just to name a few:

  • Kugel
  • Danish
  • Pancakes
  • Open-Face Sandwiches
  • Quiches
  • Cheesecake

Additionally, cottage cheese seems to have some sort of magical quality that transforms forbidden foods into perfectly "legal" foods. For example, cream cheese is strictly forbidden on the 1972 program, but if you "make your own" using cottage cheese, Knox gelatin, vanilla extract, ginger ale, and lemon juice --VOILA! It suddenly becomes a dietetic wonder.

Weight Watchers was so invested in this cheese product, they even came out with their own brand in 1973. Does anyone remember having this in their frigidaire?

Luckily, I happen to adore cottage cheese. I believe that cottage cheese is a condiment to be used liberally and placed atop everything: potatoes, noodles, eggs, etc.

Let us now sing the praises of cheese, glorious cheese! What's your favorite?

I LOVE cottage cheese! Back in the 70's my mom used to put a dollop in a bowl, then top it with fruit cocktail! Or, she'd put a canned pear half in a bowl and top it with cottage cheese! Hmmmm, I wonder if my mom was secretly on Weight Watchers in the early 70's?

I have always loved cottage cheese. Mom always fed this to us with fruit as kids in the 70s. I love what Helen said, so true!

I adore cottage cheese, too! My favorite (and the only brand I buy) is Knudsens Lowfat 2% Small Curd in the pink and blue carton. I weigh out 122 grams for 2 points on Weight Watchers. I add salt and it is one of my go-to snacks or part of a quick lunch. I try very hard to be certain there is ALWAYS some in the refrigerator. My husband doesn't eat it, so it is ALL mine.

I loved the kind that had pineapple mixed in, but I haven't seen that since the 70s. I suppose I could mix it in myself but it is not the same ;)

My Captcha word is "fligorus" which is how I would mix it, if I was not so lazy - a combo of vigorous + flinging...

OK boys and girls. Let me tell you something. When you are dieting and the main thing you're allowed to eat is cottage cheese and you HATE the very sight of it, you tend to start hating the diet, too. Good lord I wanted to like cottage cheese since it would have made things so much easier (I thought) but it actually makes me gag. I do remember trying the Weight Watchers cottage cheese and it was just as disgusting as everyone else's, even mixed with pineapple or whatever. Apparently I'm in the minority here regarding this particular foodstuff and I'm glad, since it really IS a great diet food. Unfortunately I hated it and that's probably one of the reasons I resorted to diet pills and of course we all know what THAT outcome is eventually. Fatter than ever, but at least your house was clean for awhile . . .

I am feeling the cottage cheese love here, people.

Vintage Christine--I know what you mean. I feel the same way about tuna. In the retro WW world, cottage cheese & tuna are critical. Tuna makes me gag. I hate the texture, the smell, the taste, etc. It is an assault on my senses.

Thanks goodness for WW evolution!

Yes! In the 70's I used to put a scoop of cottage cheese on a wafer cone and top it with sprinkles!!

I actually like it too, much better than ricotta. Which might be odd. I dont know but I love it on noodles :)

But yeah, lots of stuff turned diet with the addition of a scoop of cottage cheese

I love cottage cheese! My mother hates it, but I love it as a snack with cantalope or pineapple. I also have a great breakfast recipe where you make mini egg souffles using cottage cheese and spinach.

Thanks for the Mad Men comments...I left a response on my blog...I just love that show.
